What is a corner sofa?

A corner sofa — also called an L-shaped sofa, a corner settee or a chaise sofa — is a sofa designed to wrap around a corner of a room. It consists of a standard sofa section on one side and a chaise or extended seat section on the other, joined at a right angle. The result is significantly more seating than a straight sofa in a similar footprint, with a shape that naturally defines a seating area without the need for additional armchairs.

Corner sofas are available in several configurations: standard L-shape, large L-shape, U-shape (three sides), and recliner corner sofas where the seats recline electrically or manually. Corner sofa beds add a pull-out or fold-flat sleeping surface, making them practical for households that need a spare bed without a dedicated guest room.

A corner sofa is more than just a seat — it's where your day ends, your weekends begin, and your family comes together. Our corner sofas are designed for real everyday use, combining lasting durability with the kind of deep, relaxing comfort you notice the moment you sit down. How to measure your room for a corner sofa

Getting the measurements right before you order saves the hassle of a return and the near-impossible task of getting a large corner sofa back out the door. This is the exact process we recommend to every customer who calls us.

Step 1 — Measure the two walls

Measure the length of each wall the sofa will sit against. Write both down. These tell you the maximum length available for the long side (the sofa section) and the short side (the chaise section). Most L-shaped sofas are asymmetrical — one side is longer than the other — so you need both wall lengths to know which orientation works.

Step 2 — Check your walking clearance

Subtract at least 80cm from the shorter wall measurement. This is the minimum comfortable walkway between the end of the sofa and any adjacent wall, door or piece of furniture. 80cm lets one person walk past without turning sideways. If the sofa will be in a high-traffic area, leave 100cm.

Step 3 — Measure the room depth

Measure from the sofa wall outward to the opposite wall or to the nearest piece of furniture — coffee table, TV unit or dining table. The chaise section of a standard L-shaped corner sofa extends 150–175cm from the sofa back. If the total room depth is under 300cm, a compact chaise design will give you better proportions than a deep one.

Step 4 — Check doorway and hallway access

Measure your front door width, the narrowest point in your hallway, and any corners the delivery team will need to navigate. Corner sofas are delivered in sections and assembled in the room — the individual pieces are much smaller than the finished sofa. Most sections pass through a standard 76cm UK front door without difficulty.

Step 5 — Match to sofa dimensions

Every listing on our site shows full assembled dimensions. Here is what each measurement means and what to compare it against:

Flats and restricted access: If you live above the ground floor or your property has a narrow shared entrance or stairwell, call us on 02476 705 600 before ordering. We've delivered to all types of properties and can almost always find a solution — but it's easier to plan beforehand than manage on delivery day.

Left hand vs right hand corner sofa — how to choose

The rule is simple: stand facing the sofa as if you're about to sit down. If the chaise is on your right, it's a right-hand corner sofa. If it's on your left, it's a left-hand corner sofa.

This catches people out because they tend to think about which wall the chaise will touch rather than which side they'll see when sitting on the sofa. Always judge it from the sitting position — facing into the room, not facing the sofa wall.

The easiest method

Stand at the point in the room where you'll most often sit — usually facing the TV. Now look toward the sofa wall and decide which side you want the chaise on. If you want it on your left as you face the sofa, order a left hand corner sofa. If you want it on your right, order a right hand corner sofa. Both orientations are available across most designs. Still unsure? Call us on 02476 705 600 — we'll talk it through with you.

Corner sofa fabrics — which material works best for your household?

The fabric is the decision most people underestimate. You can change cushion covers but you can't change the upholstery without reupholstering the whole sofa. It's worth getting this right first time.

Chenille — best for: warmth, everyday family use

The most popular fabric in our range for families. Chenille is soft to sit on, warm in winter, holds colour without fading, and the slightly textured surface hides everyday marks better than a flat weave. Good quality chenille vacuums clean easily and resists pilling for years. Shop fabric corner sofas →

Weave and textured fabric — best for: durability, pets, heavy use

A structured weave is firmer to sit on than chenille and significantly more resistant to wear. Marks sit on top of the weave rather than soaking in. Pet hair tends to sit on the surface rather than embedding in the pile — the most practical fabric choice for households with dogs or cats.

Velvet — best for: appearance, lower-traffic rooms

Velvet corner sofas look exceptional — the pile catches the light and gives the sofa a depth no flat fabric matches. The practical trade-off is real: velvet shows sitting marks more visibly, picks up pet hair readily, and needs more care. Best suited to rooms without animals and lower footfall.

Leather Aire — best for: wipe-clean practicality, value

Leather Aire is a leather blend — real leather on the contact surfaces (seat, back, arms), durable synthetic on the less-worn panels. Spills wipe off immediately. Pet hair brushes off cleanly. Harder-wearing than full faux leather and costs considerably less than genuine leather. Shop leather corner sofas →

Genuine leather — best for: long-term investment, quality

Genuine leather develops character with use — it softens, takes on a patina, and looks better at ten years old than when new. It conditions rather than peels, survives heavy daily use with proper care, and outperforms every other material in longevity. The Dalmore, Valerie and Verona ranges are all available in genuine leather.

Faux leather — best for: budget wipe-clean

The most affordable wipe-clean option. Practical for households with young children where spills are constant. The honest limitation: faux leather can begin to crack or peel at high-friction areas after a few years of heavy use. For longevity, Leather Aire is worth the step up.

Corner sofa colours — what's most popular and why

Colour sets the tone for the entire room, so it's worth choosing carefully. Here's an honest guide to what sells, what works, and what to consider before you choose.

Grey corner sofas are the most searched colour in the UK by a significant margin — grey works with almost any wall colour, doesn't date, and handles everyday wear without showing it. Light grey keeps a space feeling open; charcoal and slate add weight and drama in larger rooms. We stock grey in fabric, Leather Aire and genuine leather.

Black corner sofas are the most practical finish for households where pet hair and daily marks are a concern — both are invisible on black, and the leather surface wipes clean in seconds.

Cream corner sofas work beautifully in rooms with good natural light and warm wood flooring. Leather Aire in cream is manageable; cream fabric in a family home with children and animals requires more upkeep.

Navy and green — particularly sage and forest — have grown significantly in popularity over recent years and work well in natural, characterful interiors. Not sure which colour works in your room? Request a free fabric swatch before you buy — call us on 02476 705 600.

Corner sofa sizes — what to expect at each scale

Sizes vary between manufacturers. These figures are typical for our range — always check the specific dimensions on the product listing before ordering.

If in doubt, size down — a sofa that fits well always looks better than one that fills every available centimetre of wall. Need a second pair of eyes on your measurements? Call us on 02476 705 600.

Recliner corner sofas — electric and manual options

Recliner corner sofas combine the seating capacity of a corner sofa with individually reclining seats — each person on the sofa adjusts their own position independently. Electric recliners are button-operated and need a power socket within cable reach. Manual recliners use a pull lever and need no power source, which gives more flexibility over where the sofa sits in the room. Both versions are available across our range.

Corner sofa beds — seating and sleeping in one

Corner sofa beds are ideal for households that need a guest sleeping option but don't have a dedicated spare room. The sofa functions as a full-sized corner sofa during the day and opens into a bed when needed. Pull-out designs have a fold-out mattress beneath the seat cushions; click-clack designs fold the backrest flat. For anything more than occasional overnight use, a spring mattress sleeps better than foam — worth checking the specification before you buy.

Corner sofa vs sectional sofa — is there a difference?

In the UK, corner sofa and sectional sofa are used interchangeably — both refer to an L-shaped or U-shaped sofa. The meaningful distinction is between fixed designs (arrive in sections, assemble into one solid piece — the majority of our range) and modular designs (individual self-contained units that can be rearranged). For a specific room you're settled in, a fixed design is the better choice — structurally more solid, better value, and the configuration is designed rather than assembled from parts.

Delivery — what actually happens when you order

Delivery to England and Wales is free on all in-stock corner sofas, typically within 7 working days. You receive a confirmed delivery date — not a vague window. The day before delivery, we call to confirm your 2-hour arrival slot so you're not waiting around all day.

How corner sofas are delivered

Our own two-person employed team — not a courier — brings every section into your home, assembles the sofa in your chosen room and removes all packaging. Corner sofas arrive in sections designed to pass through a standard 76cm UK front door. If you've added old sofa removal at checkout, they take it away on the same visit.

Old sofa removal

We offer a paid old sofa removal service. The delivery team remove your existing sofa before bringing in the new one — the cleanest approach, without the logistics of two sofas in your home at once. Book it at checkout or call us to add it to an existing order.

Flats, narrow hallways and restricted access: If you have any concerns about delivery access — narrow entrance, upper floor flat, shared hallways — call us on 02476 705 600 before ordering. We've delivered to all sorts of properties and can almost always find a workable plan, but we need to know in advance.

Frequently asked questions — corner sofas

What is a corner sofa?

A corner sofa is an L-shaped or U-shaped sofa designed to sit into the corner of a room, maximising seating while making the most of available wall space. Also known as a corner settee or chaise sofa, it's one of the most popular sofa styles in UK homes.

What size room do I need for a corner sofa?

A standard L-shaped corner sofa requires a minimum room size of approximately 350cm x 300cm, with at least 80cm of walkway clearance at the chaise end. Compact designs work in rooms from 300cm x 250cm. Measure both walls the sofa will sit against before ordering.

What is left hand facing and right hand facing?

Orientation is described as you stand facing the sofa. Left hand facing (LHF) means the chaise is on your left. Right hand facing (RHF) means the chaise is on your right. Stand in your room corner facing into the room — the wall on your left needs a left hand design, the wall on your right needs a right hand design.

Which fabric is best for a corner sofa with pets?

Leather Aire or genuine leather is the most practical choice for households with pets — hair brushes off cleanly, the surface wipes down easily, and neither holds onto odour the way fabric can. For fabric, a tight weave is the best option. Avoid velvet and chenille if you have shedding dogs or cats.

How long does delivery take?

Most in-stock corner sofas are delivered within 7 working days to England and Wales. Delivery is free. You choose a specific delivery date at checkout and receive a 2-hour arrival window confirmation the day before.

Is 0% finance available on corner sofas?

Yes. 0% interest-free finance is available from £499 across 12, 24 or 36 month terms. Apply at checkout in minutes. Subject to credit check and approval.

Do corner sofas come apart for delivery?

Yes. Every corner sofa is delivered in sections and assembled in your room by our two-person team. Individual sections are designed to pass through a standard 76cm UK front door. Call us on 02476 705 600 if you have narrow access or live above the ground floor.

What is the return policy on corner sofas?

We offer 14-day returns on all corner sofas. If your sofa isn't right — wrong size, wrong colour or change of mind — call us within 14 days of delivery on 02476 705 600. We arrange collection and process a full refund. The sofa must be in its original condition.

Can I get a corner sofa with a sofa bed?

Yes. Our corner sofa bed range offers pull-out and fold-flat sleeping mechanisms in a full L-shaped configuration. Available in compact and generous sizes across fabric and Leather Aire upholstery.

What warranty comes with a corner sofa?

Every corner sofa at Furniture Instore comes with a manufacturer's frame warranty covering structural defects. Full warranty details are listed on each individual product page. Call us on 02476 705 600 if you have a warranty query.

Are corner sofas good for small rooms?

Yes — a compact L-shaped corner sofa works in rooms as small as 3.5m x 3.5m, leaving adequate walkway space. The corner configuration makes more efficient use of wall space than a straight sofa and separate armchair. Measure both walls before ordering to confirm fit.

What is the difference between a corner sofa and a chaise sofa?

A corner sofa has full seating on both sections — you can sit upright comfortably on both the main sofa and the chaise end. A chaise sofa has a standard sofa on one side and a chaise longue on the other, designed for lying on rather than sitting. All corner sofas on this page have full seating on both sides.
