Left hand or right hand: the decision to get right

The one that costs money if it goes wrong, because a corner sofa cannot be turned round once it arrives. A left hand and a right hand version are separate products, mirror images, and the code describes which side the long return runs to when you face the sofa. Conventions differ between retailers, so rather than trust the letters, hold the photographs against your own corner or ring us to confirm. For sofas without a return, see our sofas collection.

The titles describe orientation four different ways

Worth saying plainly. The same thing is written as RHC and LHC on the Orka sofas, as Left Corner and Right Corner on the Verona Scatter greys, as Right Hand Corner on the Rupert and as LHC alone on the Scott. Several state no orientation at all. If the sofa you like does not say which way it runs, that is a question for us rather than an assumption for you. Our FAQ page has the number.

L shape or U shape

An L shape has one return and tucks into a corner, committing two walls. A U shape has a return at both ends, seats more and encloses a seating area, but needs three sides of clear floor and becomes the thing a room is arranged around. The two Carnaby sets include a footstool

Both Carnaby U shapes come with a footstool as part of the set, and nothing else here does. Worth knowing before you compare prices, and worth planning for: a footstool inside a U shape needs floor space of its own. Check the product title rather than assuming. Fabric, velvet and leather

Most of this collection is fabric, a flat weave. Four are velvet, from Sloane and Scott, a pile rather than a weave: it catches light, reads as a different shade depending which way you brush it, and is cleaned differently. If you choose the velvet

Worth knowing before delivery rather than after. Velvet shows shading and pressure marks wherever the pile has been pushed a different way, by sitting on it or by the delivery wrapping. It is a characteristic of pile rather than a fault, and brushing it back in one direction usually settles it. On a corner it shows most along the seat of the return. Colours in this collection

Grey dominates, with black, cream, beige and silver also present. Grey and black are the most forgiving of everyday marks. Cream and beige keep a room light but show marks soonest, which matters more on a corner than a two-seater because there is more surface to mark. Silver appears on one Carnaby U shape. Measuring a corner sofa

Different from measuring a straight sofa, and the place most orders go wrong. Measure both wall runs and the depth of each section, not just the longer run, and all three sides on a U shape. Mark the whole shape on your floor with tape and live with it a day, then measure the route in against the packaged dimensions. Our sofa measuring guide sets out the method.

Getting it into the room

Easier than it looks. Corner sofas arrive in sections that connect together rather than as one piece, which is why they get through doorways a large fixed sofa would not. What matters is the packaged dimension of the largest single section, against your narrowest doorway or turn. If access is awkward, ring us before ordering. Care, by material

Fabric wants vacuuming with an upholstery tool and blotting from the outside inwards rather than rubbing. Velvet wants brushing the pile in one direction and blotting, never rubbing, which crushes it. Leather wants dusting and a damp cloth. Our own two-person team brings the sections into your chosen ground-floor room, connects them and takes the packaging away, rather than leaving anything at the door.
